About

About Detect Magazine

Who runs Detect Magazine, what the blog covers, how articles are researched and checked, and how to reach the people who write them.

Start here

Detect Magazine publishes when there is something to publish. There is no schedule and no filler, and every piece stays in the archive even after we have changed our minds about it.

There was no plan. Rosamund Quist kept being asked the same handful of questions about hidden secrets in games, mysteries, tech notes and everyday living, got tired of writing the same reply, and put the replies somewhere permanent.

Where we stop

There are questions we routinely decline. Anything that depends on facts only you can see, and anything where being wrong would cost you real money on our say so.

Who is responsible for this

Every article carries the name of the person who wrote it, and every name links to a page listing everything else they have written.

Rosamund Quist, Features editor. Rosamund spent years writing about game culture for print magazines before moving online. She edits Detect Magazine's features and has a soft spot for games that hide their best ideas in plain sight.

Margaux Teixeira, Games and mysteries writer. Margaux is a detective game fan with a reputation for finding easter eggs before anyone else in her friend group. She writes about mysteries, puzzles and the secrets developers leave for players.

Soren Abernathy, Tech and living writer. Soren worked as a software developer before he started writing. He covers technology, creative tools and the practical side of everyday living, from family trips to protecting your hearing at work.

What we publish

  • Games. Online games and the secrets inside them: easter eggs, mysteries, hidden gems and the people who find them.
  • Tech Notes. Software, animation and the creative technology that shapes how we work and play.
  • Living. Family travel, health at work and the small habits that make everyday life better.

Each piece sits under exactly one heading. Readers arriving from search mostly land in games, tech notes and living, so those sections get looked after first.

The method

Nothing here is written from a search results page. If we have not handled it ourselves or spoken to somebody who has, we leave the topic alone until we have.

We keep the commercial side visible. Some outbound links earn us money, and that never buys a change to the text around them.

If you want the mechanics rather than the summary, the editorial policy has them, including what we refuse to publish.

Corrections

Point at the sentence. Write to [email protected] or use the contact page. Factual errors are fixed quickly, and when a correction changes the conclusion of a piece we say so at the foot of the page rather than editing quietly.
