Editorial Policy

How Detect Magazine chooses topics, checks claims, names writers, dates articles and handles corrections and commercial links.

What you can hold us to

A site is only as good as the process behind it. Here is ours for hidden secrets in games, mysteries, tech notes and everyday living, written plainly so you can weigh the rest of the site against it.

Dating and updates

We treat dates as facts, not decoration. Refreshing a page to look current without changing its substance is a small lie we would rather not tell, so we do not touch the date unless the content genuinely moved.

How we choose what to write

We do not plan an editorial calendar. Articles appear when a question has come up often enough to be worth answering properly.

A minority of outbound links are commercial. None of them have ever changed a sentence that was written before the link existed.

Requests to soften a verdict are declined, and we keep them on file. More than one has become the subject of its own paragraph later.

What we will not publish

  • Guarantees. Nobody in this field can honestly offer one.
  • Filler written to occupy a topic rather than to answer it.
  • Anything we would be embarrassed to defend in person.

How a page gets written

  1. Draft from experience, not from a page of search results.
  2. Underline every claim that rests on memory rather than a source.
  3. Support it or lose it. Each underline is backed by something we can name, or it comes out.
  4. A cold read by a second person catches the confident guesses the writer stopped seeing.

Bylines

Bylines are real people with real archives attached. If you disagree with a piece, you can see what else the same person has written and judge accordingly.

Rosamund Quist, Features editor. Rosamund spent years writing about game culture for print magazines before moving online. She edits Detect Magazine's features and has a soft spot for games that hide their best ideas in plain sight.

Margaux Teixeira, Games and mysteries writer. Margaux is a detective game fan with a reputation for finding easter eggs before anyone else in her friend group. She writes about mysteries, puzzles and the secrets developers leave for players.

Soren Abernathy, Tech and living writer. Soren worked as a software developer before he started writing. He covers technology, creative tools and the practical side of everyday living, from family trips to protecting your hearing at work.

Corrections

Corrections go to [email protected]. Include the address and the sentence. Anything factual is fixed without argument. Anything that changes what the article recommends gets a dated note underneath, so the change is visible.
